Why Would You Need Breast Augmentation Surgery?

There are numerous reasons why a woman may choose to have breast augmentation, including the following:

  • Naturally Small breasts
  • Natural loss of breast volume due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss
  • Asymmetry of the breasts
  • Congenital breast defects

Breast Augmentation Surgery – An Overview

Breast augmentation can be accomplished by two basic methods: 1) insertion of an FDA-approved breast implant filled with either saline or silicone gel; 2) inserting fat (“fat transfer”), taken from elsewhere in the patient’s body, into the breast.

Breast implants are silicone shells containing either saline or silicone gel. Both options are safe, each with different advantages. Our skilled surgeons typically place the implants under the breast tissues or the chest muscle. With respect to a fat transfer, it provides the added benefit of removing fat where the patient doesn’t want it to a location where they need volume. Our surgeons will evaluate your unique needs and help you decide the method of augmentation best suited for you.

What Can You Expect?

Breast augmentation surgery is fully customized to your unique needs. Here’s a look at what you may experience before, during, and after the procedure:

Before the procedure:

We will walk you through the process and help you make an informed decision regarding the type of implant that’s right for you. We may also recommend complementary surgery, such as a breast lift. We will simulate the final look so you can get a preview of the expected outcome.

During the procedure:

We perform breast augmentation surgery under general anesthesia. When augmentation is performed by fat transfer, several small cuts (about the size of a #2 pencil eraser) are made in the location(s) the fat is taken from and on each breast. When it involves a breast implant, we make incisions in the creases on the underside of the breasts or around the areola in order to make them as subtle as possible. The last step is stitching the incisions together and taping and bandaging the area. In a few days, a surgical bra can replace your bandages.

After the procedure:

You may feel tired and sore after the surgery, but this typically passes in a day or two. Many women return to work within the week.

We typically remove the stitches a week to ten days after the surgery. You will find that pain, swelling, and sensitivity will gradually subside over a few weeks. The scars from the cuts will start to fade within a few months and continue to fade for months or even years.

Complications:

Unexpected results may occur with surgery, including but not limited to bleeding and infection, and heavy scarring. The risks of complications depend on both the patient and the procedure, so your surgeon will review these in detail with you during your consultation.
