Klemme resident on road to recovery after ankle surgery

Says Dr. Tyler Mulkey is a ‘straight shooter’ and someone who cares about you

Chad Boyington, 52, a forklift operator from Klemme, Iowa, and his wife Darci of 23 years, love to travel. One of their favorite spots is near Hatfield, WI. where they rent a cabin three times a year, bring up their UTV and enjoy the great outdoors. It was on one of these WI. getaways this past Fall that Chad had a misstep from the patio of their    cabin to the gravel surface to pick up a few items of clothing and in seconds he was on the ground. Said Chad, “My head was down by my foot and ankle and I heard a snap snap.” After a visit to the ER it was confirmed via X-ray that Chad had fractured his left ankle.

Chad’s primary care provider, Julie Larson, ARNP, at Hancock County Health System in Britt, set up an appointment for Chad with Dr. Tyler Mulkey, DPM, in the Orthopedics      specialty at the Mason City Clinic.

“Dr. Mulkey is a straight shooter. He doesn’t sugarcoat anything. But I could just tell by the way he talked to me and explained things, he was very interested in helping me,” said Chad.

According to Dr. Mulkey, Chad has a bimalleolar equivalent fracture which occurs with both a medial ankle injury and lateral malleolus fracture. Since there are injuries to both sides of the ankle, bimalleolar fractures are considered unstable and require surgical treatment.

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, because there are injuries to both sides of the ankle, most bimalleolar fractures need surgical repair.

Said Dr. Mulkey, “We placed a plate and screws on the outside of the ankle, the fibula. This kind of surgery is one of the most straight forward ankle surgeries for fractures which provides stability to the ankle after healing. After surgery, it typically takes six to eight weeks for the bone to heal. There may be some stiffness or decreased strength and that is why we sometimes recommend physical therapy to help with recovery.”

Mulkey said the other option for a fracture is to get a cast — but the surgery is sometimes preferable to a cast as it improves stability and decreases recovery timeline.

After Chad’s surgery on On October 15, 2024, he used a walker for 5-6 weeks, and then was in a  walking boot, and now 3 months post surgery, Chad is in a walking brace and onto a full recovery.

Chad said, “There is not a question Dr. Mulkey won’t answer. One day, I said this might sound dumb, but how do I get in and out of my pick-up truck. He said ‘this is not a dumb question at all’, and proceeded to demonstrate it to me in the office.” Chad went home, practiced a few times getting in and out of his vehicle. And then, nearly three months of not driving his beloved truck, Chad said, “Darci, we are going for a ride!”

Chad is looking forward to getting back to work as a fork lift operator at the local   Winnebago factory, and back to his travels up to WI, out west, and down south. He said, “I’d like to even be able to shovel the snow.”
