Acute care surgery is a critical service in Northern Iowa, especially in rural areas where access to specialized medical care is often limited. According to recent data, rural hospitals in the U.S. serve nearly 60 million people, and the need for urgent surgical care is growing. At Mason City Clinic, Dr. Christopher Martin, MD, is at the forefront of providing this essential service. His approach to medicine is as much about skill and precision as it is about passion and commitment. Dr. Martin’s story is one of dedication, hands-on expertise, and a deep-rooted desire to serve his community.
“I decided to go into medicine when I was very young,” he recalls. “I actually made the decision when I was nine years old, and I never changed my mind and always pursued that.” This passion for medicine, combined with his love for working with his hands, naturally led Dr. Martin to the field of surgery. “I’ve always been a very hands-on person,” he explains. “I like to fix things. I have an interest in metalworking. I have an interest in carpentry. I have an interest in auto mechanics.” These hobbies, which require precision and attention to detail, mirror the skills needed in surgery. They also highlight his ability to think creatively and solve complex problems, making him a well-rounded surgeon.
“Right now, I’m an acute care surgeon, which means I take care of the things that are urgent or emergent,” he says. Dr. Martin’s role involves providing emergency surgical care for patients in need across Northern Iowa. His work is vital in a region where access to specialized medical care can be limited, particularly in rural communities.
“Our organization and our group cover up to 16 counties in Northern Iowa,” Dr. Martin notes. “A lot of these places in rural communities either don’t have a surgeon or they have limited access to surgeons.” His work ensures that patients in these areas have access to life-saving surgical interventions when they need them most. Whether it’s an emergency appendectomy or a more complex trauma surgery, Dr. Martin is ready to step in and provide the necessary care.
One of the unique aspects of Dr. Martin’s practice is his commitment to serving rural communities. In areas where surgical services are scarce, Dr. Martin’s expertise is invaluable. “Something that comes in through their emergency department that would require general surgical skills, then they would call me, and then I would take care of them,” he explains. “They would transfer up here, and we would take care of them here at our facilities.”
“We see a wide variety of things: appendicitis, inflamed gallbladders, hernias that are caught, holes in things that shouldn’t have holes in them, bleeding and trauma,” he describes. “We take care of traumas as well. So we see a wide variety of things that need emergency general surgery coverage.”
“I think that what I do as a surgeon is oftentimes high risk, it’s stressful, the stakes are high,” he admits. “And I think the more grounded you are and the humbler you are and the more down to earth you are, the better you can be as a surgeon. That’s just my personal opinion. That’s how I try to be.”
This philosophy not only guides his approach to surgery but also shapes his interactions with patients. Dr. Martin believes that maintaining a down-to-earth attitude helps build trust and rapport with those he treats, which is especially important when dealing with emergencies. His patients know they are in capable, compassionate hands, whether they are undergoing a routine procedure or a complex surgery.
“For me, it’s given my life a purpose,” he reflects. Dr. Martin’s commitment to his patients and his community drives him to continually improve his skills, stay updated on the latest surgical techniques, and provide the best possible care for his patients. It’s not just about performing surgeries; it’s about making a real difference in people’s lives, particularly in communities where access to healthcare is limited.
Dr. Christopher Martin’s hands-on approach to acute care surgery, combined with his deep commitment to serving rural communities in Northern Iowa, makes him a vital part of the Mason City Clinic team. For Dr. Martin, being a surgeon is more than just a profession—it’s a calling, a way to give back to the community, and a path to fulfill his purpose in life. At Mason City Clinic, patients are not just getting a surgeon; they are getting a compassionate, skilled professional who is dedicated to their care and well-being.
