From Pain to Play: A Patient’s Journey Through Hip and Knee Replacement

Living with chronic pain can significantly impact your quality of life, especially when it affects your ability to perform daily tasks and enjoy time with loved ones. For many, hip and knee replacements offer a new lease on life. In this blog, we’ll explore the experiences of one patient, highlighting the transformative power of hip and knee replacement surgery.

A Life of Pain and Limitations

Imagine a life where every step is a struggle, and simple tasks become monumental challenges. This was the reality for one patient, a grandmother who loves her rural life and family activities but found herself increasingly debilitated by hip and knee pain.

“I have two daughters and a wonderful husband, four grandchildren, two boys and two girls, and we live out in the country, in Waucoma, Iowa, and are raising miniature beef for our personal needs, and we always plant a big garden and do lots of canning,” she shared. However, her pain was progressively worsening, making it difficult to participate in these beloved activities.

The Impact of Chronic Pain

Chronic pain doesn’t just affect the person experiencing it; it impacts the entire family. The patient’s hip pain became so severe that her husband had to assist her with basic tasks. “My hip was getting difficult to walk. My husband would have to help me up and down off the tractor. I’d either have to have a bucket or steps or something to progressively get up on the tractor,” she recalled. This dependency limited her ability to contribute to the family’s farming and gardening efforts.

Seeking Medical Help

When the pain became unbearable, the patient consulted with Dr. Radulescu, a visiting orthopedic surgeon from Mason City Clinic. “Dr. Radulescu comes here to visit from Mason City, so I was able to consult with him here, and he agreed that it was definitely my hip. He gave me options and I was also having pain with my knees, but we addressed everything together,” she explained. MercyOne New Hampton Medical Center is a quick 20-minute drive for Joyce from Waucoma and offers a full range of medical services from primary care to physical therapy. Dr. Radulescu suggested trying injections as a less invasive first step. Unfortunately, the injections provided only temporary relief. “Those injections only lasted maybe two days, and he says, ‘Well, that goes to show that the injections are not the solution and you’re justified in wanting surgery,'” she said. Realizing that surgery was the best option, they moved forward with the hip replacement.

The Road to Recovery

The hip replacement surgery was a success, significantly improving her mobility and quality of life. “So we did the hip first and that went really well, recovered well, and so then we opted to do the left knee. And recovery is going very smooth,” she noted.

Her positive experience with the hip replacement gave her the confidence to proceed with knee replacement surgery. “I’m down to Tylenol at bedtime and only walking with a cane when I’m outside, just for safety’s sake. And we’re going to go ahead and do the right knee,” she said, looking forward to a more active and pain-free future.

A Bright Future Ahead

With her surgeries behind her, the patient is excited about returning to her favorite activities and spending quality time with her grandchildren. “By summer, when hay making season starts and gardening starts, I’ll be able to function and contribute to the family and play with the grandkids again,” she shared with a smile.

Her story is a testament to the life-changing benefits of hip and knee replacement surgeries. “Dr. Rad, he was very compassionate. I just felt like he had real interest in making me feel better,” she praised her doctor.
