For many, a career in healthcare begins with a calling—an experience that shapes their path. That was certainly the case for Dana Young, Administrator of Mason City Clinic. From her early days as a transcriptionist to leading one of North Iowa’s most respected healthcare organizations, her story is one of dedication, perseverance, and paying it forward.
Growing up, Dana faced health challenges that required early medical intervention. The experience left an impression on her. While she didn’t envision herself in a clinical role, she knew she wanted to be part of the healthcare field.
“I knew I didn’t like the blood side of medicine,” she laughs. “So, I focused on the administrative side instead.”
After graduating from North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) with an Associate’s Degree in Medical Secretary, she secured an internship at Surgical Associates—which later became Mason City Clinic. It was there that she encountered her first real challenge: understanding doctors’ dictations as a transcriptionist.
“I remember thinking, ‘OMG, I can’t understand anything he’s saying!’” she recalls. But with persistence—and a supportive manager—she got the hang of it. Not long after, she was offered a full-time transcriptionist position, marking the beginning of a long and fulfilling career at Mason City Clinic.
From the start, Dana embraced every opportunity to learn. She never said no to new challenges, a mindset that would serve her well as she took on greater responsibilities over the years.
“I had bosses who encouraged me to take on more and continue my education,” she says. “While working full-time, I earned my Bachelor’s Degree through Buena Vista University and later my MBA from the University of Minnesota.”
Her career evolved alongside her education. She held multiple roles in in managing various departments, human resources and administration before being named Administrator of Mason City Clinic in 1999.
Ask Dana to describe a typical day, and she’ll tell you—there isn’t one.
“There’s always something new,” she says. “A lot of my time is spent preparing for meetings, problem-solving, gathering data, and supporting our team when they need help.”
With a vast range of responsibilities, her role requires adaptability, critical thinking, and a deep understanding of both clinical and administrative operations.
Looking back, Dana is most proud of the opportunities she’s created for others.
“My career started with someone giving me a chance and encouraging me to grow. I’ve tried to do the same for others,” she says.
She has mentored many employees, supporting their career growth and encouraging them to pursue further education. Some have advanced within Mason City Clinic, while others have taken on leadership roles elsewhere.
“I love hearing from past employees who say they learned a lot from me,” she says. “That’s one of the most rewarding parts of my job.”
During her tenure, the clinic has seen significant changes. When she first joined, Surgical Associates had around 12-15 physicians. At its peak, Mason City Clinic housed over 70 providers, and today, they have 47 physicians and 20 Advanced Practice Providers.
Recruiting to a rural area presents challenges, and today’s providers have more choices than ever. Still, Mason City Clinic remains a pillar of healthcare in the region, thanks in part to the leadership and dedication of its team.
Despite her demanding role, Dana remains a caretaker—both professionally and personally.
“I take care of MCC, I help care for my almost 92-year-old mom to keep her in her home, and I oversee the care of a 93-year-old friend as her trustee,” she shares. “And, of course, there’s time for home and my husband.”
As for hobbies? “Who has time for those?” she jokes.
To those just starting their journey at Mason City Clinic, Dana offers simple but powerful advice:
✅ Be open to learning. You never know where new skills will take you.
✅ Be a team player. If you see someone struggling, help them out.
✅ Take pride in your work. Do your job to the best of your ability.
Her own story is a testament to the power of these principles.
Every day brings a new challenge, a new problem to solve, and another opportunity to make a difference. And that’s what keeps Dana motivated.
“Mason City Clinic has given me so much—education, growth, and a career I’m proud of,” she says. “I just hope I’ve been able to give back in the same way.”
