Elizabeth Takacs, MD, Returns ‘Home’ To Join Urology Practice At The Mason City Clinic

Dr. Takacs Bringing Specific Skill Set To Women In North Iowa

Elizabeth Takacs, MD, is the first female urologist to join the Urology specialty at the Mason City Clinic. Dr. Takacs is bringing a specific skill set, expertise, and passion for urologic conditions that affect women to the North Iowa area. Board-certified through the American Board of Urology, Dr. Takacs has a sub-specialty certification in Urogenital Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery.

“I have a passion for treating female urinary incontinence and urinary and pelvic floor issues that affect women. I believe that many women who struggle with conditions such as urinary incontinence, prolapse, pelvic pain and recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI’s) are often reluctant to seek care.” said Takacs. “There tends to be a stigma towards these conditions and I am excited to be available to talk with women and treat these conditions that can affect their quality of life significantly.”

Studies estimate that over 50% of women experience some form of urinary incontinence during their lives, but only 25%–61% of symptomatic women seek care. The impact of urinary incontinence on women’s lives is profound. It goes beyond the physical discomfort and inconvenience, affecting their emotional well-being, social interactions, and overall quality of life.

Women living with urinary incontinence often experience feelings of embarrassment, shame, and isolation (National Institute of Health). Dr. Takacs will also provide general urologic care including treatment of kidney stones, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and men with urgency, frequency and urge incontinence. In addition, she can provide care to patients who have underlying neurologic conditions (ie: Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease) which may be impacting their urinary habits.

Dr. Takacs practiced urology for 17 years in Iowa City at the University of Iowa, and has returned to her hometown where she was born and raised, and graduated from Mason City High School in 1991. She is happy to be in a smaller community and closer to her seven siblings. She will begin practicing at the Mason City Clinic on February 1, 2024.

Said Takacs, “One of the benefits of practicing in Mason City is the ability to do outreach. I believe it is important to travel to see patients where they live so that they don’t have to drive long distances, or sometimes not get the care they need.”

In addition to seeing patients in Mason City, Dr. Takacs will initially be traveling to outreach clinics in Belmond and Osage.

Said Dr. Takacs, “One of the most satisfying parts of my job is providing care that can have a tremendous positive impact on patients’ overall quality of life — to give patients the confidence to leave their homes and to feel better about themselves.”

Dr. Takacs is married and has two sons. Outside of work Dr. Takacs enjoys watching her sons compete in sporting activities. She and her husband enjoy being active too. “I am trying to learn the art of golf and recently we started playing pickleball,” said Takacs.
